The Eskort Castle Gate store opened its doors in May 2024 – in their continuous drive to enhance operational safety, they required a reliable fire detection system for the store’s cold storage and chiller rooms. This project demanded a customised approach due to the specific environmental challenges involved.
The Challenges
Cold storage and chiller rooms, reaching temperatures as low as −25°C, are crucial for Eskort’s product preservation but present significant obstacles for traditional fire detection systems. Conventional point detection devices often experience malfunctions or trigger false alarms at such low temperatures. Eskort required a specialised solution to operate effectively in these conditions, ensuring safety and compliance with industry regulations.
Implementation and Outcome
Technoswitch assisted the installer with designing and implementing a robust aspirating smoke detection solution to address the site’s unique challenges by employing a SecuriSmoke ASD system by Securiton. SecuriSmoke is proven for its adaptability in extreme environments, and the system was equipped with heated sampling points to counter the effects of freezing temperatures and allow uninterrupted functionality within Eskort’s cold storage and chiller rooms.
The ASD system draws continuous air samples through strategically positioned sampling pipes. Heated sampling points prevent frost buildup, maintaining reliable airflow and smoke detection even at sub-zero temperatures. Key components of this solution include smoke sensing devices (SSD533) set at a 0.02% Obs./m alarm threshold for early detection and a range of high-quality accessories designed for durability in low-temperature environments.
